The objects and artifacts in the Civic Collection are both the product of and witnesses to history. While they help tell important stories, they are not complete histories by themselves and they do not represent all history equally. There are gaps in the collection and silences in the history that the collection can presently share.
The City’s curatorial and collections staff in the Heritage Services Department are working with the community to develop, maintain, and interpret the Civic Collection to better reflect an inclusive history of Kingston. This will involve the addition of new objects over time and a deeper examination of existing objects to ask new questions and bring forward a more complete and mutli-vocal history.
As you visit this site over time you will see new objects added to the collection and our featured exhibits grow alongside. We invite you to think about the existing gaps and silences and what objects and histories you would like to see included in the collection.
