a- This is a hard cover book entitled "A Treatise on the Locomotive and the Air Brake". It was prepared for students of the International Correspondence Schools, in Scranton, Pa. This is Volume II, First Edition and published by the International Textbook Co. in 1901. It has a black front and back cover, with lighter decorative corners, and a decorated spine. The spine reads "A TREATISE // ON THE // LOCOMOTIVE // AND THE // AIR BRAKE // VOL. II // 5-14 // INTERNATIONAL // TEXTBOOK CO." The back has white faded writing that is now illegible. It contains information and diagrams on locomotive machinery and air brakes. b- This is a double sided map dated 1899. It has a map of Cape Colony and Orange Free State of South Africa on one side. The other side is a map of Natal, South Africa. Both maps are titled "THE SEAT OF WAR". The map was published by J. L. Nichols and Co. of Toronto in 1899.
