a- This is a hardcover book entitled "Practical Mechanical Engineering Volume III". The book was edited by Carl S. Dow, who was the technical writer with the B.F. Sturtevant Company. It was published by The American Text-Book Co. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1909. The front cover is detached from the main body of the book. The back cover has red fabric on the middle, and black fabric on the right edge as well as the top and bottom left corners. The spine has deteriorated, which reveals part of the book binding. On the first page inside the cover, there is a black stamp from the Pump House Steam Museum on the top, and a pencil-written number of "99205086" on the bottom right corner. On the back of the first page is a hand-written note that reads "Cooksville// James Albert Kitney Christmas 1930 from Walt to Jim". There is a black-and-white photograph of the subway power house of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company in New York City in front of the title page. As Volume III of the series, this book covers information on ships, locomotive engines and boilers, air brakes, gas and oil engines, refrigeration and marine engineering. The book was written for the operating engineers, firemen, and students to obtain a working knowledge of modern mechanical engineering. b- This is the front cover.
