Description

Fillister grooving plane comprised of three parts, a wooden rectangular body with an adjustable piece of wood attached to the sole and an adjustable piece of metal going through the middle that can be lowered to connect with the sole (a), a wooden wedge that tapers to a point and is rounded at the top (b), and an iron with a wide angled blade (c). The wedge and the iron fit together inside of an angled cutout through the middle of the plane and the wedge holds the iron in place as the iron cuts the wood below. Stamped on the toe of the plane is "I BLOWER", " J. BOULDEN", and "T P". Stamped on the heel is "I BLOWER", "T P", and "J. BOULDEN" stamped three times.

History

These sash planes are used to build sash window frames. Two blades work simultaneously on a single workpiece. One, the grooving or rabbet iron, cuts a groove for the glass window pane to sit in. The other, the sash or other molding plane, cuts the decorative profile of the window frame. In some cases, the distance between the cutting irons can be adjusted, so the plane can be used for several different projects.
