A metal molding gauge. Two molded metal bars run the length of the tool, and are secured at each end with metal fasteners. Each metal bar has a groove running down the centre. On the top side, there are measurement markings, up to 6 inches. The smallest measurement is 1/16". Approximately 170 parallel metal pins are sandwiched between these bars and extend out to either side.
Moulding gauges, also known as contour gauges or profile gauges, are used to duplicate the contour of an object. Press one side of the pins against an object, like a floor trimming, and the pins will take the shape of the object. The tool can then be used to make identical trimmings. Moulding gauges are used in several different fields, like woodworking, metalworking, and pottery.
