A wooden molding plane that consists of a wooden wedge and is missing the iron.
a - The body of the plane is rectangular shaped with a concaved and convexed wave-like sole. "ILM // L CANTIN // J. HEROUX" is stamped into the toe and heel of the plane. There is a hole through the entire width of the plane near the toe.
b - The wooden wedge for the plane that has two pointed prongs on one end.
This molding plane is 4” wide and would have been pulled via a rope passed through the hole in the body. In one wide cut, mouldings for homes and furniture could be produced, more often wide mouldings like this would have used 2 or 3 smaller planes that were easier to push through the wood. Unfortunately this plane is not complete and the original blade is missing. However, it is a good example of a late 19th century plane by this Quebec city planemaker whose planes are relatively scarce.
