Description

A hollow molding plane comprised of three parts, a thin rectangular body with a hollow profile on the sole (a), a wooden wedge that tapers to a point at the bottom and is rounded at the top (b), and an iron with a rounded blade to match the hollow profile of the plane (c). The wedge and the iron fit together inside of an angled cutout in the plane's body and the wedge holds the iron in place as the plane runs across the wood surface below. Stamped on the toe of the plane is "J. MARSHALL", and "SHEPLEY". Stamped on the heel is "5", and "R. WATT".

History

Hollow molding planes are extremely versatile. They are used to cut concave grooves in any portion of a workpiece. Used alone or in conjunction with other planes, hollow molding planes allow workers to create or adjust any conceivable form.
