Description

Thin round molding plane comprised of three parts, a wooden rectangular body with an angled cutout through the middle and a round sole/profile (a), a wooden wedge piece that tapers to a point at the bottom and has a rounded hand/finger hold at the top (b), and an iron with a thin stem that has a wider section at the bottom that matches the curve of the round profile on the body portion (c). The wedge and the iron fit together inside of the angled cutout through the body piece and the wedge (b) holds the iron (c) in place while the iron's blade cuts the wood below. Stamped on the toe of the plane is "J. MARSHALL", and "SHEPLEY". Stamped on the heel of the plane is "1", "I BLOWER", and "R. WATT".

History

Round planes are one of the basic molding tools. They cut convex circular grooves into a workpiece. They are found paired with hollow planes of the corresponding shape. They can be used for shaping, trimming and molding. They can be used in conjunction with other planes to create any shape imaginable. Sets of hollow and round planes are an essential part of a woodworker’s toolkit.
