Description

Thin wooden round molding plane comprised of three parts, a wooden rectangular body piece (a), a wooden wedge piece (b), and an iron (c). The wedge and the iron sit together inside of the hollowed out portion at an angle and the wedge holds the iron in place so that only the blade's edge is exposed to the wood beneath. Stamped on the plane's heel is "[R]" (B?) "WATT", as well as the number "5". Stamped on the toe edge is "SHEPLEY", and "J. MARSHALL".

History

Round planes are one of the basic molding tools. They cut convex circular grooves into a workpiece. They are found paired with hollow planes of the corresponding shape. They can be used for shaping, trimming and molding. They can be used in conjunction with other planes to create any shape imaginable. Sets of hollow and round planes are an essential part of a woodworker’s toolkit.
