Description

A wooden side bead plane consisting of 3 parts.
a- The body is rectangular and made of a brown hardwood with red tints. A cheek protrudes from the bottom half of the front body. The sole is concavely curved in a parabolic shape. A thin wooden insert runs lengthwise and closes the curve. 4 screws at the front of the cheek allow for fine-tuning. Stamps on the toe read: "GABRIEL"; "A. PEMBERTON"; "I BLOWER". Stamps on the heel read: "I BLOWER"; "3".
b- The wedge is made of the same hardwood as the body. It tapers to a point on one end and is rounded in an elliptical form on the other. A cut-out below the head allows for easy handling.
c- The iron is a long narrow strip of ferrous metal. It abruptly widen near the cutting edge. The cutting edge is curved concavely in a parabolic form. The butting width is 5/8".

History

Side bead planes are used to put a bead, or a convex circular groove, into the edge of a piece. They are considered molding planes. Beads can be put into any straight piece, but are popular in tables, shelves and doors.
