Description

A corner lock plane consisting of 3 parts.
a- The body is rectangular and made of a hardwood with a dark brown varnish. A cheek protrudes from the bottom half of the front and back sides. The throat cuts through the middle of the body and is exposed through the front cheek. The sole consists of a deep groove framed by a thin ridge at the front and a flat-bottomed fence at the back. Stamps on the toe read: "LOURIE"; "I BLOWER". Stamp on the heel reads "I BLOWER".
b- The wedge is made of a hardwood similar to the body. It tapers to a point on one end and is rounded in an elliptical form on the other. A curved cut-out below the head allows for easy handling.
c- The iron is a narrow strip of dark grey metal. It widens abruptly near the cutting edge. The cutting edge consists of a flat chisel blade with a protrusion on the left edge which creates an almost 90-degree blade corner. The width of the cut is 5/8". The elevation of the cut is 3/8".

History

Block planes are a variety of smoothing plane. They can be used to remove thin layers of material, or to chisel off thick pieces. They are usually 8 to 12 inches long and the iron is set at a low angle. Block planes are used for cutting following the grain of the wood.
