Description

A wooden molding plane with an ogee profile comprised of three parts, a wooden rectangular body piece (a), a wooden wedge piece that tapers at the bottom and has a rounded top with a finger hold (b), and an iron with a long thin stem and a curved blade edge to match the ogee profile of the body (c). The wedge and the iron fit together inside of the plane through an angled cutout in the middle of the plane. The wedge holds the blade in place as it cuts the wood below. The plane has a dark stain or finish. Stamped on the plane's heel is "I BLOWER", the number "5", and "W.BRADING". Stamped on the toe is also "W.BRADING". This stamp appears three times in total on the toe's edge. There is also the stamp "I BLOWER", "MOSELEY LATE MUTTER", and "[W__UCKER]" which is difficult to read because "W. BRADING" has been stamped over top of some letters. Also, "W.BRADING" is stamped on both sides of the wedge piece (b).

History

Ogee molding planes are used to mold the profile of a workpiece. The ogee profile consists of a curve shaped like an 'S', or a double curve inversed around an inflection point. This can be combined with any other detail, like beads or fillets, to create unique ogee profiles. Ogee molding planes can be used to give a sophisticated finish to baseboards, doorways, and furniture trimmings.
