Description

A wooden ogee molding plane composed of 3 parts.
a- The body is rectangular and made of a dark brown hardwood. All corners are slightly rounded. A cheek protrudes from the lower 2/3 of the body. The sole is curved convexly with a shallow notch to accommodate the ogee profile of the cutting iron. A wooden fence is attached to the back side of the sole with 4 nails. Stamps on toe read: "H LONGDEN & SON/SHEFFIELD"; "JOHN GREEN"; "A. MUNNOCH"; "I BLOWER". Stamps on heel read: "I BLOWER"; "A. MUNNOCH" (x2). Stamp on the front body reads: "A. MUNNOCH".
b- The wedge is made of the same hardwood as the body. It tapers to a point on one end and is rounded on the other. An angular cut-out allows for easy handling.
c- The iron is a long narrow strip of ferrous metal. It abruptly widens near the cutting edge. The cutting edge is shaped in an ogee profile with a fillet. The cutting width is 5/8".

History

Ogee molding planes are used to mold the profile of a workpiece. The ogee profile consists of a curve shaped like an 'S', or a double curve inversed around an inflection point. This can be combined with any other detail, like beads or fillets, to create unique ogee profiles. Ogee molding planes can be used to give a sophisticated finish to baseboards, doorways, and furniture trimmings.
