Description

A smoothing plane comprised of three parts, a wooden rectangular body with a flat sole and a horn attached to the toe (a), a flat rectangular wedge piece with two longer pieces of wood attached on either side (b), and a flat rectangular iron with a thin angled blade at the bottom (c). The wedge and the iron fit together inside of an angled cutout in the body and the wedge holds the iron in place as the iron cuts. Stamped on the top of the plane near the toe is "5 5". Stamped on the heel is "50 m/m", as well as the letters "B", "F", and "c" inside of a triangular 'shield' type symbol. Stamped on the top of the iron is "EXTRA QUALITY" above a large letter "P". Below this is "GUSSSTAHL GARANTIE". On the back of the iron is "184". There are also the numbers "184" stamped on the back of the plane.

History

Smoothing planes are used for the finest finishing work on the wood surface. Before sandpaper was in common use, surfaces such as veneers were not sanded down, but "smoothed" with the smoothing plane. It was essential to set the iron with extreme precision, and to work with the highest degree of skill.
