Description

A wooden block plane consisting of 3 parts.
a- The body is a rectangular prism made of a brown softwood. The width is consistent throughout. A large throat cuts diagonally through the body and tapers toward the sole. A wooden strip sits horizontally across the throat and sits inside narrow holes in the front and back body. The sole is flat.
b- The wedge is made of the same softwood as the body. It is wider than it is high. It tapers to a chisel edge on one end and is squared on the other.
c- The iron is a wide strip of dark grey metal. The top edges are chamfered. The cutting edge is flat and perpendicular to the length of the iron. A stamp at the top of the iron reads "W.P. WARD" with an anvil symbol.

History

Block planes are a variety of smoothing plane. They can be used to remove thin layers of material, or to chisel off thick pieces. They are usually 8 to 12 inches long and the iron is set at a low angle. Block planes are used for cutting following the grain of the wood.
