Description

A small wooden coachmaker's bead molding plane comprised of three parts, a small rectangular shaped body piece (a), a wooden wedge piece that tapers to a point at the bottom and has a rounded finger hold at the top (b), and a thin iron with a wider blade portion at the bottom that matches the bead profile of the body's sole (c). The wedge and the iron fit together inside of an angled cutout in the plane and extend out of the top of the plane. The wedge (b) holds the iron (c) in place as the iron cuts the wood below. Stamped on the heel of the plane is "I BLOWER". Stamped on the toe edge is "I BLOWER", and "SHARP".

History

Coach builders use many of the ordinary woodworking Planes but those designed specially for coach work are often of smaller size, and have shorter soles adapted for working in confined spaces or on sharp curves. For example, coachbuilder’s Smoothing and Compass Planes are often made under 6 inches long.
