Description

A germanic style wooden block plane.
a- The body is a rectangular prism made of light brown hardwood. A large throat cuts diagonally through the body. The sole is flat. At the to end, there is a large horn-shaped handle made of the same hardwood.
b- The wedge is made of the same hardwood as the body. It is wide-set. The top edge is flat, and the piece tapers to a thin edge at the bottom.
c- The iron is rectangular with chamfered top corners. A stamp with a two-cherry symbol reads "WS&C". A stamp below it reads "WILHELM SCHMITT & CO./1858/GARANTIE/GUSS STAHL", along with the two-cherry symbol and an arch. A smaller secondary iron is secured to the top of the first with a slotted screw.

History

Block planes are a variety of smoothing plane. They can be used to remove thin layers of material, or to chisel off thick pieces. They are usually 8 to 12 inches long and the iron is set at a low angle. Block planes are used for cutting following the grain of the wood.
