An adjustable sash handplane consisting of 7 removable parts.
a- The body is rectangular and made of a brown hardwood. It consists of two lengthwise halves held together by thick iron screws. A long wooden block on the front bottom edge acts as a fence. Two throats cut through the body: the bigger sits close to the front edge, and the smaller sits near the back, with an opening in the centre of the back side. A circular hole runs through the viewer's right side of the body. The sole is curved near the back to cut the exterior profile of the sash. The front of the sole is cut at a square angle.
b- The smaller wedge is a narrow strip of wood. It tapers slightly toward the bottom. The head is squared with a small triangular cut-out for easy handling.
c- The smaller iron is a narrow strip of grey metal. It abruptly widens near the cutting edge. The cutting edge is straight and perpendicular to the length. The width of the cut is 3/8".
d- The bigger wedge is made of a hardwood similar to the body. It tapers to a thin strip on one end and is squared on the other. A groove is cut out of the bottom edge, leaving behind two wooden spurs.
e- The bigger iron is a wide strip of grey metal. The width is consistent throughout. On end has chamfered edges while the other is shaped in a curved "ovolo" profile. The width of the cut is 3/4".
f- A wing nut composed of ferrous metal. It adjusts the screws that hold the body together.
g- A wing nut composed of ferrous metal. It adjusts the screws that hold the body together.
These sash planes are used to build sash window frames. Two blades work simultaneously on a single workpiece. One, the grooving or rabbet iron, cuts a groove for the glass window pane to sit in. The other, the sash or other molding plane, cuts the decorative profile of the window frame. In some cases, the distance between the cutting irons can be adjusted, so the plane can be used for several different projects.
