Description

Round molding plane comprised of three parts, a wooden rectangular body with an angled cutout through the middle and a concave round profile on the sole (a), a wooden wedge piece that tapers to a point and is rounded on top (b), and a thin iron with a blade at the bottom that matches the round profile on the body (c). The wedge piece and the iron fit together inside of the angled cutout in the body, and the wedge holds the iron in place as it cuts the wood below. Stamped on the toe of the plane is "I BLOWER", "H PAYR", and "A. MONTY" above three stars, and then "ROXTON POND. P. O." below. Stamped on the heel is "249", "I BLOWER", "22", and "R. WESTLEY". There is also a circular green sticker on the plane's heel, as well as a blue label with the numbers "1224" on it above the heel.

History

Round planes are one of the basic molding tools. They cut convex circular grooves into a workpiece. They are found paired with hollow planes of the corresponding shape. They can be used for shaping, trimming and molding. They can be used in conjunction with other planes to create any shape imaginable. Sets of hollow and round planes are an essential part of a woodworker’s toolkit.
