Description

A wooden tonguing plane comprised of three parts, a rectangular wooden body portion with a tonguing profile/sole that leaves behind a raised portion to fit into a groove (a), a wooden wedge piece with a tapered bottom and a curved circular top (b), and an iron with a thin stem and a larger 'blade' portion at the bottom which follows the same cutout as the profile on the body portion's sole (c). The wedge and the iron fit together inside of the plane and the wedge (b) holds the iron (c) in place as it cuts. Stamped on the heel of the plane is "I BLOWER", "7/8", and "R. WESTLEY". Stamped on the toe edge is "I BLOWER", and "A. MONTY" above three star shapes, and "ROXTON POND. P.O." below. There is also a blue label stuck to the plane's heel with the numbers "649" in white type, and a small green circular sticker above.

History

Tonguing planes cut two parallel grooves in a workpiece. They are used in conjunction with a corresponding grooving plane to create tongue-and-groove joins. When used together, they are known as match planes. The iron of a tonguing plane contains two sharp edges and a central notch that leaves a raised ridge.
