Tonguing plane comprised of three parts, a rectangular wooden body with an angled cutout through the middle and a tonguing profile on the sole (a), a wooden wedge that tapers to a point at the bottom and is rounded at the top (b) and an iron with a forked blade that matches the tonguing profile on the plane's body (c). The wedge and the iron fit together inside of the plane's cutout and extend out of the top of it. The wedge holds the iron in place as it cuts the wood below. Stamped on the toe of the plane is "WALLACE MONTREAL", "F. STRUTT", "F", and "I BLOWER". Stamped on the heel is "8/8", "I BLOWER", "F", and F. STRUTT."
Tonguing planes cut two parallel grooves in a workpiece. They are used in conjunction with a corresponding grooving plane to create tongue-and-groove joins. When used together, they are known as match planes. The iron of a tonguing plane contains two sharp edges and a central notch that leaves a raised ridge.
