Description

A wooden tonguing plane consisting of 3 parts.
a- The body is rectangular and made of a brown hardwood. A cheek protrudes from the bottom half of the front side. The sole is flat with a centred groove to match the shape of the cutting iron. The mouth is large and is cut slightly left of centre. It slopes down toward the toe of the plane. Stamps on the toe read: "J. DRYBURGH/BRIGHTON"; "I BLOWER". Stamps on heel read: " I BLOWER"; "3/4".
b- The wedge is made of the same hardwood as the body. It tapers to a blunt point on one end and is chamfered on the other. A shallow cut-out below the head allows for easy handling.
c- The iron is a narrow strip of ferrous metal. The cutting edge is perpendicular to the length and has a deep, centred notch. The width of the cut is 1". The width of the tongue is 1/4".

History

Tonguing planes cut two parallel grooves in a workpiece. They are used in conjunction with a corresponding grooving plane to create tongue-and-groove joins. When used together, they are known as match planes. The iron of a cutting plane contains two sharp edges and a central notch that leaves a raised ridge.
