A tonguing plane comprised of three parts, a rectangular body with a curved handle built into the heel and a tonguing profile on the sole (a), a wooden wedge that tapers to a point at the bottom and is rounded at the top (b), and an iron with a cutout in the middle of the blade at the bottom to match the tonguing profile on the sole (c). The wedge and the iron fit together inside of the plane's body and the wedge holds the iron in place as the plane is run along the wood surface. Stamped on the top of the plane towards the toe of the plane is "I BLOWER". Stamped on the heel of the plane is "I BLOWER". Stamped on the toe of the plane is "I BLOWER", "T. WINDER", and "J.P. History

Tonguing planes cut two parallel grooves in a workpiece. They are used in conjunction with a corresponding grooving plane to create tongue-and-groove joins. When used together, they are known as match planes. The iron of a tonguing plane contains two sharp edges and a central notch that leaves a raised ridge.
