A wooden carriage maker's circular foot plane with a rabbet blade. Consists of 3 parts.
a- The body is rectangular with a convexly rounded base. It is made of a light brown hardwood with yellow undertones. The width is consistent throughout. The throat cuts through the middle of the body and ends in a bell-shaped mouth visible on both the front and back sides. Stamps on the toe read: "CRANE/COBOURG"; "I BLOWER". Stamp on the heel reads "I BLOWER".
b- The wedge is made of a similar hardwood to the body. It tapers to a point on one end and is rounded in an elliptical form on the other. A deep cut-out below the head allows for easy handling.
c- The iron is a narrow strip of grey metal. It abruptly widens on both sides near the cutting edge. The cutting edge is flat and perpendicular to the length of the iron. The width of the cut is 1 1/4".
This curved-foot plane was traditionally used for carriage-making. It is used to smooth and level curved surfaces. The straight blade can also be used to cut rabbets, or grooves, in a curved surface.
