Description

A wooden skewed rabbet plane with three parts, a wooden rectangular body (a), a wooden wedge piece (b), and an iron (c). The body (a) is open in the middle from the top of the piece down through the bottom. The wedge (b) and the iron (c) fit together in the body and extend out of the top past the body piece. There is also a wide circular opening in the middle of the body above where the blade extends out of the bottom, so that shavings can be easily discarded. On the heel edge, "INCH", "1/2", "D.McCALLUM", and "I BLOWER" are stamped. On the toe edge, "I BLOWER", "D.McCALLUM" (Twice) and "J. Dawson MONTREAL" is stamped.

History

An advantage of the skewed iron is that it helps to draw the plane into the corner of the rebate, and it throws the shaving to one side which helps to prevent choking. For extra fine work, capped irons are sometimes used.
