Description

A grecian ogee plane consisting of 5 parts.
a- The body is rectangular and made of a light brown hardwood. A cheek protrudes from the bottom half of the front body. Two throats cut diagonally through the body and are exposed through the cheek. The sole is curved in an ogee profile along the length, with a protruding strip of wood forming a fillet. Stamps on the toe read: "WALLACE/MONTREAL"; "I BLOWER". Stamps on the heel read: "I BLOWER"; "4/8".
b- The first wedge is made of the same hardwood as the body. It tapers to a point on one end and is rounded in an elliptical form on the other. A cut-out below the head allows for easy handling.
c- The second wedge is identical to the first (b).
d- The first iron is a narrow strip of dark grey metal. It widens slightly near the cutting edge. The cutting edge is narrow and slightly curved convexly. The width of the cut is 1/8".
e- The second iron is a narrow strip of dark grey metal. It widens abruptly near the cutting edge. The cutting edge is curved in an ogee profile. The width of the cut is 7/8". Stamp on the handle reads "W. GREAVES & s."

History

Ogee molding planes are used to mold the profile of a workpiece. The ogee profile consists of a curve shaped like an 'S', or a double curve inversed around an inflection point. This can be combined with any other detail, like beads or fillets, to create unique ogee profiles. The Grecian ogee profile consists of a traditional ogee with an adde fillet. Ogee molding planes can be used to give a sophisticated finish to baseboards, doorways, and furniture trimmings.
