Smoothing plane comprised of three parts, an oblong curved rectangular body with an angled cutout through the middle and a flat sole (a), a rectangular wooden wedge piece with two longer pieces on either side (b), and a thin flat iron made of two pieces of metal (c). The iron and the wedge piece fit together inside of the body and the wedge holds the iron in place as it cuts the wood below. Stamped on the toe of the plane is "I BLOWER", and "WALLACE MONTREAL". Stamped on the heel of the plane is "I BLOWER". Stamped on the iron is "THOs FIRTH & SONS WARRANTED CAST STEEL".
Smoothing planes are used for the finest finishing work on the wood surface. Before sandpaper was in common use, surfaces such as veneers were not sanded down, but "smoothed" with the smoothing plane. It was essential to set the iron with extreme precision, and to work with the highest degree of skill.
