A hand-held adze with a wooden handle and an iron head. The handle is made of a cool brown hardwood. It is cylindrical with small knots and irregularities. The head is made of a dark ferrous metal. It wraps around the head then joins into a single strip. small pieces of metal are wedged into the ring to fit snugly around the handle. The head tapers slightly then widens again near the end. It ends in a chisel edge perpendicular to the length of the head. The number "832" is etched into the cheek. The letters "J.H." are etched into the back of the head.
An adze is a tool similar to an axe, but with a blade perpendicular to the length rather than parallel to it. They can be used to smooth or gouge wood. Mortising adzes have long, thin heads in order to fit into narrow spaces like mortises.
