Description

A wooden butter press consisting of a mould and a circular press. The mould is cylindrical and tapers at the very top. There is a hole in the centre of the top to accommodate the press handle. The press plate is circular and shows a negative-relief design of a beaver. A simple moulded edge surrounds the design. The handle extends from the centre of the back plate and extends up through the hole in the lid. The handle widens at the top so it is secured inside the lid.

History

Beavers have had a greater impact on Canada’s development than any other non-human species. Thanks to the fur trade of the 17th and 18th centuries, the beaver is recognized as a national emblem, representing Canadian values and identity. The beaver symbol was likely used to show that a butter product was proudly crafted by and for Canadians.
