Description

A large gooseneck mortice chisel. The handle is made of a dark hardwood. It is cylindrical and the free end is rounded. The blade is made of heavy grey steel. It is cylindrical at the base and tapers to a square cross-section. The blade is curved in a hook shape. It tapers to a chisel edge at the very end. The width of the cut is 1.4cm or 1/2".

History

Gooseneck chisels, or lock-mortice chisels, are used to work the inside of a mortice, a recess that is made to hold a corresponding projection, known as a tenon. The curved blade allows the user to access otherwise hard-to-reach places and work difficult corners. The curve also adds leverage to the operation, so the user only needs to use little force.
