History

It is believed that more than 1,600 victims of the typhus epidemic were buried on the grounds of Kingston General Hospital in 1847-1848. This mass grave containing the remains of Irish immigrants and local people lay unmarked and overgrown until 1894 when Archbishop James Vincent Cleary donated a marble monument on August 6th, 1894 portraying the Angel of the Resurrection (also more commonly known as the Angel of Mercy) to mark the grave site. In 1966, to accomodate the expansion of Kingston General Hospital, some of the bodies were re-interred at St. Mary's Cemetery on Division Street. The Angel of Resurrection was also moved to this location at this time.
