A ceremonial sword that has red and yellow corded tassel's attached to the crossbars of the sword. a - The sword has a black corded rope handle and a black, red, white and green design that is repeated on the ricasso, guard and pommel. Engraved onto one side of the blade is "PRESENTED TO // MAYOR R. A. FRAY // FROM CITIZENS OF KINGSTON. // CENTENNIAL YEAR , JAN. 11TH 1967". "TOLEDO // SPAIN" is on the ricasso, just underneath the cross bar. On the opposite side of the blade on the ricasso is "ESPADA // DE LAZO". b - A gold coloured corded tassel that is attached to the crossbar. c- A red coloured corded tassel that is attached to the crossbar.
Used by Mayor Fray to cut the Centennial cake in Market Square, 1st July 1967.
Nationally and locally, Centennial in 1967 was a year of tremendous celebration. Mayor Robert A. Fray (1909-1993), a successful sign maker, presided over a wealth of Kingston events and projects to honour 100 years of confederation. Among these, he hosted a royal visit of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, announced the naming of the new Confederation Park facing City Hall and re-read the historic 1867 proclamation of Confederation.
