A black and white photograph of the Grand Theatre Orchestra. The photograph has 10 people in 2 rows of 5 each. The photograph is fixed to a mat. It has hand printed names and arrows pointing to the different members of the band. It is captioned with "Grand Theatre Orchestra" and dated to 1905. There is a pen note on reverse that reads "David Cleland // Donated by the Whig-Standard , 27 Aug. 1981" and the number "101" written at the top.
The Grand Theatre opened in January 1902 following its construction on the site of Martin's Opera House, which burnt down in 1898. This photograph of the Grand Theatre Orchestra is dated to 1905, when the theatre was bought by Ambrose J. Small. Throughout the twentieth-century, the Grand Theatre underwent several different ownerships and restorations - even facing the threat of demolition - but it continues to foster art, culture, and music in the city today.
