a - A hand made single-sided mother-of-pearl shell carving. The scene on the shell depicts a forest-fringed rocky seashore with sailboats and a bridge leading to a pagoda. The shell is stored in a cardboard presentation box.
b- The rectangular shaped lid for the presentation box. The lid is red in colour and has a textured appearance.
b - The rectanguar shaped base of the presentation box.
c - The insert for the box that the shell sits on. It is made of styrofoam with an orange satin piece of fabric covering it. The styrofoam has an oval shaped cutout in the centre and the satin fabric is adhered to the sides of the styrofoam.
Produced extensively during the 1800s and particularly popular with the Western market, this carving was a gift to one of the Mayors of the City of Kingston.
