This artifact consists of a wooden plaque with a metal plate and a number of broken pieces from a plaster crest of the HMCS Cataraqui. a- The wooden plaque with a metal plate on the bottom. The words on the plaque reads "Her Worship Helen Cooper - HMCS Cataraqui Battle of the Atlantic Sunday Church Parade May 7, 1989". b- A broken piece of the crest that has a gold coloured bird's foot on a dark blue background. c- A broken piece of the crest with the gold coloured crown and the words "TARAQU" in blue lettering. d- A broken piece of the crest that has partial crown with the word "CA". e- A broken piece of the crest with part of the gold coloured rope. f- A broken piece of the crest with part of the gold coloured rope and some paint loss. g- A broken piece of the crest that has part of the gold rope and 2 maple leaves. h- A broken piece of the crest with part of the gold rope and some maple leaves. i- A broken piece of the crest featuring the gold coloured rope. j-l- A broken piece of the crest that has part of the gold rope. m-n- A small broken piece of the crest that has a dark blue background. o- A small broken piece of the crest that is gold in colour. p- A small broken piece of the crown that is blue in colour. q-al- Very small broken fragments of the crest.
Plaque presented to Her Worship Helen Cooper by HMCS Cataraqui on Battle of the Atlantic Sunday Church Parade 7 May1989. HMCS Cataraqui is one of 24 naval reserve units across Canada. This event commemorates the Battle of the Atlantic, a naval battle that lasted 2,075 days — the longest-running battle of the Second World War.The annual commemoration takes place in communities across Canada on the first Saturday in May each year. Ten of the ships that were lost during the battle carrying food, equipment or personnel were built in Kingston. The Battle of the Atlantic commemorates those who kept that lifeline going between North America and the U.K. and the mainland for the war effort. Ships like HMCS Trentonian that were lost, was one of 10 ships were built in Kingston during the Second World War.
