A circular shaped metal badge mounted on a wooden plaque. The crest is for the Canadian Commander 5th Destroyer Squadron (Cancomdesron Five) and it has a gold painted edge resembling a robe. There are 3 maple leaves at the bottom edge of the badge, including 1 red and 2 greens. At the top of the badge is a gold coloured crown with the sterns of 3 ships and 2 white sails between them. The name "CANCOMDESRON FIVE" in red lettering is below the crown on a white background. The centre of the badge has a blue background on the top half, while the bottom half is made of repeating wavy horizontal lines of blue and white. On top of the lines, there is a silver sword being held aloft by two hands emerging out of a red and white stripped raft. The back of the plaque has a plain wooden surface with a small circular shaped groove at the top.
On July 8, 1974, Brodeur was appointed Commander of the Canadian Fifth Destroyer Squadron, also known as CANCOMDESRON Five. He held this post until August of 1976. During this time, Brodeur’s squadron took part in NORPLOY 1974, a deployment to northern waters in the spring of 1974. In January of 1976 Brodeur took his fleet south to San Juan, Puerto Rico for painting and refurbishment in , an assignment code named Operation Springboard. Brodeur was also tasked with overseeing security for the sailing events at the Olympic games in Kingston, Ontario. Other duties were as Commander (ORANGE) Naval Force in a NATO major exercise Ocean Safari 1975, which included visits to the East Atlantic NATO (EASTLANT) ports.
