Description

This artifact consists of Edwin Horsey's book titled "Cataraqui, Fort Frontenac, Kingston" and several pieces of paper documents that are tucked into different pages throughout the book. a- This is a red hardcover book. On the front cover, there is the word "Kingston" printed in silver lettering on the top left corner. The name "E.E.Horsey" is printed in gold lettering on the bottom right corner of the front cover. The spine has decorations of embossed lines and debossed diamond shapes. The back cover is red, plain, and has debossed line decorations close to the edges. Inside the book cover, there is a hand-written note in black ink on the top of the first page, reads "Property of Edwin Horsey". The cover page specifies the book title, reads "Cataraqui// Fort Frontenac// Kingston". This book is printed, and has single-sided texts featuring the history of Kingston and its surrounding areas. It is signed by Edwin Horsey on the bottom of the preface, dated to December 1934. There are multiple marks of correction in black ink throughout the pages of the book. b- This is a map of Kingston in 1838 printed on a card stock paper. There are names of the main streets in Kingston on the map. On the back of the map is hand-written notes in pencil, reads "Enlarge to 7 1/2'' x 4 1/2''// Copper half-tone-onzine// Etching- which ever gives best results." Below the notes, there is a tape with printed words of "RAPID GRIP AND BATTEN LIMITED// 384 VITRE STREET WEST- MONTREAL// PHONE: MA.9421" in black texts. This map is tucked in between the front cover and the first page of the book. c- This is a piece of paper with hand-written notes in blue ink. The notes are on the back of a calendar page from the Standard Life Assurance Company, featuring the week of April 27 to May 3, 1952. The notes are about the construction and history of the Aushor Building. This paper is tucked in between the front cover and the first page of the book. d-e- These two pages are identical copies of the contents of the book "Kingston". They are both single-sided and printed in black texts. They list all the chapters in the book with their page numbers accordingly. Both pieces of paper are tucked in between the front cover and the first page of the book. f- This is a blank piece of paper that has yellowing and is folded in half from the middle. g- This is a fragment from a newspaper. On the front, there is the word "STAR" on the top left corner, and the texts on the top right corner read "THE WEATHER/ City and Lower Lakes: Sunday - Partly cloudy with slightly higher temperature. The newspaper was sold for three cents per copy, and eighteen cents per week. There is the word "FRANCE" printed in bold black texts on the main portion of the front page. The back page has a title of an article, reads "Russ Dig in to Hold Gains Kharkov Fight Gets Wilder". This paper is tucked in between page 47 and 48. h- This is a single-sided piece of paper with printed black texts. The title is "Re Commercial Bank, p.59". The texts describe Mr.Robert Drummond's assistance to the Commercial Bank, in which Drummond provided gold coins for the bank at the time of its opening in 1831 when there was a delay in gold. This paper is tucked in between page 58 and 59. i- This is a single-sided piece of paper with printed black text. It is titled "Re: John Counter". The text has information on John Counter's two cousins, based on the writing of the 80-year-old Mrs.M.Bullis from December 20, 1935. This paper is tucked in between page 77 and 78. j- This is a single-sided piece of paper with printed black text. It is titled "Re: John Counter, p.78". The text is about John Counter's bakery and his association with the timber trade. It was written based on a conversation with Mrs.Montague Strange and Miss Ella Fraser on May 22, 1936, as well as the diary of the late Alexander Muir. The paper is tucked in between page 77 and 78. k- This is a paper with hand-written notes in pencil. It reads "Mr.R.W.Brock and his wife injured in airplane mishap at British Columbia during early December of 1935 are both dying". The paper is tucked in between page 78 and 79. l- This is a typed, single-sided, two-page text. The two pages are stapled together on the top left corner. There is a hand-written pencil note on the top left corner, reads "See ch.12 // P.80". The text is titled "RE: GOVERNMENT OF UPPER CANADA". It compares and contrasts the governments of Great Britain and Upper Canada. This document is tucked in between page 79 and 80. m- This is a newspaper clipping. The text is titled "Where Governors Lived", introducing the residence of Sir Charles Metcalfe, the governor of Canada. This paper is tucked in between page 92 and 93. n-o- This is a two-page, single-sided, typed paper. The text is titled "Ref.p.103, paragraph 2. - CHURCHES", which includes four extracts from reports, books and speeches. The first extract is from the report of Hon.Richard Cartwright, jr. on October 12, 1792; the second one is from the Bishop of Quebec's 1794 report regarding Upper Canada; the third one is from the speech of Mr. John Charles Dent in the book "History of the Upper Canada Rebellion"; and the last one is from a statement of the Rev.Dr.Strachan in his evidence before the Select Committee of Grievances in 1835. Both paper are tucked in between page 102 and 103. p- This is a single-sided piece of paper with typed text. The text is titled "Re: Bishop Macdonell", and it is an extract from Sir Richard H.Bonnycastle's writing "Canada and the Canadian" in 1846. The writer describes Bishop Macdonell's characteristics as well as his contribution to Christianity. This paper is tucked in between page 111 and 112. q- This is a single-sided piece of paper with a typed text. The text is titled "Memorials of Rev.J.Machar, D.D. p.31". It has Rev.Machar's comment of Kingston and the Kingston's churches upon his arrival at the city, dated to September 1827. This paper is tucked in between page 113 and 114. r-s- This is a typed, single-sided, two-page paper document. It is titled "Re: St.Andrew's Church", including several extracts from the Kingston Chronicle dated between 1820 and 1920. The texts have information on the history and construction of the Presbyterian church. Both paper are tucked in between page 113 and 114. t- This is a single-sided piece of paper with typed text. The text is titled "Memorials of Rev.J.Machar, D.D. p.31". It has Rev.Machar's comment of Kingston and the Kingston's churches upon his arrival at the city, dated to September 1827. The paper is tucked in between page 115 and 116. u-v- This is a single-sided, typed, two-page paper document. It is titled "Re: Location of William Losee's Town Lots and First Methodist Meeting place// Ref.page 123, pat.1", dated to November 11, 1935. The text is about William Losee's granted or purchased lots in Kingston. It also has information on Canniff and Rev.John Carroll's encounters with William Losee, as well as Dr.Brown's research on the Kingston churches. This paper document is tucked in between page 122 and 123. w- This is a single-sided piece of paper with a typed text. It is titled "Ref. Page 140, last paragraph// Re:Location of Midland District School". The text describes the location of the early Midland District School, which is believed to be on the east side of Wellington Street, between Clarence and Brock streets. The paper is tucked in between page 139 and 140. x- This is a typed, single-sided piece of paper. It is a copy of the Regimental Orders by Lieut.-Col. Moffatt from March 18th, 1867 in Kingston. This order states the duties for the officers, the regiment will parade, and pays gratitude to the 1st Company 14th Volunteer Battalion Militia that was about to be relieved from duty. The paper is tucked in between page 157 and 158. y- This is a single-sided piece of paper with a typed text. It is titled "Re: Old St.Paul's Church Graveyard". The text is about the life and achievements of Sir Richard H.Bonnycastle, who took charge of the construction work of Fort Henry and was ranked at Lieutenant-Colonel of Royal Engineers and Militia of Canada West. Sir Bonnycastle was buried in the place that was the later St.Paul' s Sunday School building. The paper is tucked in between page 195 and 196. z- This is a single-sided piece of paper. It has a typed text regarding the early graveyards in Kingston. There were two graveyards in 1828, known as the "old Graveyard" and the "new Graveyard". The War of 1812 and the cholera epidemics in the 1830s and 1840s increased burial demands in Kingston. This paper is tucked in between page 198 and 199. aa- This is a single-sided paper with a typed text. The text is about the early settlements in Cataraqui, commanded by Major Robert Rogers in the mid-late 1700s. This paper is tucked in between the cover page of the section "Kingston" and page 1. ab- This is a single-sided piece of paper with typed text. The text is titled "Memo.for 'Some Early Inns and Taverns' - Page 3". It has information about Mrs.Patrick's Tavern based on a file of the "Kingston Chronicle" from 1819 and Mr.J.Ross Robertson's writing in his book "History of Freemasonry". This paper is tucked in between page 2 and 3. ac- This is a single-sided piece of paper with a typed text. The title is "Re Mink's stage house and livery". The text has information on the Mink's livery and hotel located on Clarence street, based on an interview with Mrs. Strange and Miss Fraser on May 22, 1936. This paper is tucked in between page 7 and 8.
