Description

This is a correspondence between Edwin Horsey and Wainwright D. Blake, Bucknell University regarding the history of Loyalist settlement in Cataraqui the late 1700's. a- This is a front of an envelope, with handwritten notes on the reverse side. The notes refer to the directory of 1857. They have notes written down for: James Hope (a wholesale retail dealer), Isaac Hope (A contractor), James Martin (a carpenter) Nicholas Martin (a labourer), William Martin, (a clerk), and William Martin (a grocer). There is a not below it that there is no information on either the Norths or the Vairs. b- This is the back of an envelope with handwritten notes on it. It contains note from a book by Canniff (appendix, page 669) regarding a Martin seen in New York, on February 25th, 1784. c- This is the first page of a letter from Wainwright D. Blake to Edwin Horsey. It is dated October 10, 1951. The letter head reads "BUCKNELL UNIVERSITY / LEWISSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA / DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY". It contains details on a Martin family, with potential various spellings, who were a Dutch family that left Albany and went up the St. Lawrence River to Cataraqui. It mentions that families may have married into the family. It also mentions that Cornelius Martin was a loyalist, while his brother Derick was sympathetic to the American Colonies. Edits have been made in pen. d- This is the second page of a letter from Wainwright D. Blake to Edwin Horsey. It is dated October 10, 1951. The letter head reads "BUCKNELL UNIVERSITY / LEWISSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA / DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY". It discusses the potential of borrowing a book by Canniff. It is signed in pen. e- This is a letter from Wainwrith D. Blake to Edwin Horsey. It is dated March 1, 1951. It addresses the reprints that were sent, and thanks him for the information that he has made available. f- This is a carbon copy of letter from Edwin Horsey to Mr. Wainwright D. Blake. It is dated February 5th, 1951. It is a single page but double sided. It mentions some maps and plans that were sent as well as a Provincial Road Map of Ontario. It requests more information on the characters in the "story" to see if there is any more already known information to pass along. The reverse side references Edwin C. Guillet's "Early Life in Upper Canada" and Canniff for more information. g. This is a handwritten, two sided letter from Wainwright D. Blake to Mr. E. Horsey. The letter head reads "BUCKNELL UNIVERSITY / LEWISSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA / DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY". It is dated Jan. 31/51. It mentions that a "half true (?) half legendary story ... has come into my possession and [I] feel that the ... information would be helpful" followed by a request for maps of Kingston between 1775 and 1825. It mentions that he will be travelling to Kingston in the summer of 1951.
