Description

This artifact includes Edwin Horsey's Scrap Book, which is filled with newspaper clippings, and various separate paper documents that are tucked into different pages throughout the scrapbook.
a- This is a red hardcover book. On the upper left of the front cover, there is the word "Scrap Book" written in gold lettering. The spine is red, flat, and has the word "Scrap Book" on the upper portion. The back cover has a plain red surface with debossed decorative patterns close to the edges. On the front page, there are hand-written notes in blue ink, read "_ill Johnston/ P34". The scrapbook is assembled by Edwin Horsey. There are newspaper clippings and paper documents glued onto the book pages, as well as separate paper pieces inserted in between the pages, all featuring the history of Kingston. There are various marks of corrections in black ink and pencil throughout the book. The scrap book is numbered up to page 35, and the numbers are written in pencil on the top right corner of the pages.
b- This is a small newspaper clipping. The texts introduces the history of the "Great Union", in which Ireland was conquered by Cromwell, Lord Protector of England. The paper is tucked in between the cover page and page 1.
c- This is a newspaper clipping. The title on the top reads "Surgeon-Cleric, 94 To-day More Than Ever Convinced Canada Is Coming Country". This article introduces the life of Dr.E.Hooper, who was 94 years old and stated that "Canada was one of the most promising countries in the world and would have a great future." There is a black-and-white portrait of Dr.Hooper. The article is dated to January 3, 1941. The paper is tucked in between the two pages with articles of "The Town Watchman" and "Baptist Church to Hear Nonagenarian Preacher".
d- This is a newspaper clipping. The title is "Veteran Preacher At Ottawa Sunday/ Dr.E.Hooper, Aged 93, Delivers Sermon". This short article is about Dr.E.Hooper's social, religious involvements and unique life experience. It is dated to May 29, 1939. The paper is tucked in between the two pages with articles of "The Town Watchman" and "Baptist Church to Hear Nonagenarian Preacher".

g- This is a newspaper clipping. The title of the article is "Bogus Doctor Leaves RCN, Not Clear Yet". The article is about the discharge of a young American, Ferdinand Walsh Demara, for his fraudulent entry into the Canadian navy. The paper is tucked in between two pages with articles of "Taught Medicine At Queen's University Through He Held No Degree" and Veteran News Editor Dies".
h- This is a two-page newspaper clipping. The two pages are stapled on the left of the top edges. Together, the pages feature an article titled "Brilliant 'Dr.Cyr' Identified as Ex-U.S. Hospital Orderly". The article discusses the discharge of Ferdinand Demara, who previously claimed to be a doctor to enter the Canadian navy. It also stated that Demara's father said his son was "bright to the point of genius". The article is dated to 1957. The paper is tucked in between two pages with articles of "Taught Medicine At Queen's University Through He Held No Degree" and Veteran News Editor Dies".
i- This is a single-sided piece of paper with typed texts. It is the programme brochure of Kingston Centennial Thanksgiving Service, which was held in Memorial Hall on April 3, 1938. The programme includes singing, speeches, and music performances. The paper is tucked in between the page with the article of "Centenary First Meeting of Town Council Celebrated" and the page with photographs of the Centenary Civic Thanksgiving Services.
j- This is a reverse L-shaped newspaper clipping. It is titled "Part of Wall of Old Fort Frontenac Found". The article is about the excavation at Tete de Pont Barracks. It was believed that Col.Hagarty found part of the southern wall of the original Fort Frontenac. The article is dated to October 18, 1937. It is tucked in between the pages that feature articles of "Gypsy King, Died at 96 Ends Famed Royal Line" and "Final Proof Unearthed That Remains Are Fort Frontenac".
k- This is a card with four black-and-white photographs regarding the history of early ice hockey. The upper right photo is the old barracks that was originally built as Fort Frontenac. The middle photo is one of the original ice hockey stick used in a champion game. The photo on the middle right edge is Queen's University's first champions in any ice hockey league. The lower left photo is the city building in front of where the world's first ice hockey game was played. The photos were by courtesy of Herbert F.Thomson. It is tucked in between the two pages featuring the article of "Heroism of Defenders of This Part of Canada During the War of 1812 Is Recalled to Memory".
l- This is a newspaper clipping with photographs on both sides. On one side is a black-and-white photo of Prime Minister Mackenzie King receiving the replica of a brass cannon at Fort Henry. On the back side are two black-and-white photos. The top photo is a drumhead service at Riverdale Park with the attendance of Prime Minister King, while the bottom photo features the closing celebration of the Canadian Corps Reunion in Toronto. This paper is tucked in between the two pages that display old Fort Henry Reopening photos, dated to August 1, 1938.
m- This is a soft-cover brochure that introduces the programme presented at Fort Henry on August 1-3, 1938, named "A Century of Progress". There is portrait of Count Frontenac on the front cover. The brochure lists the production committee, the instrumental music and vocal music producers, as well as the prologue of the performance. On the last page, there is a brief introduction of Fort Henry with a black-and-white photograph. The brochure is tucked in between the two pages with articles of "Centenary Parade Is Finest Ever Produced in the City; Chinese Win the First Prize" and "Travels 11,000 Miles to Be Present".
n- This is a newspaper clipping with a black-and-white photograph and a text. The photo features an interesting ceremony during Old Homes Week at the Kingston Fire Department, in which Fire Chief James Armstrong presented a watch to Mrs.James V.Brennan of Detroit. The watch was presented to Mrs.Brennan's father 78 years ago, when he was a fireman. The text on the bottom of the paper explains the photograph. This paper is tucked in between the two pages with articles of "Centenary Parade Is Finest Ever Produced in the City; Chinese Win the First Prize" and "Travels 11,000 Miles to Be Present". o- This is a newspaper clipping. The article is about the Kingston Gaslight Company and the danger of gas works. p- This is a newspaper clipping. It is titled "Col.Macphail, 78, Is Dead". The article introduces the life of Col.Alexander Macphail, who was a soldier, professor, poet, and the former department head of Queen's University. There are marks in red ink on the paper. The article is dated to January 13, 1949. r- This is a newspaper clipping. The title on the top reads "Relics Near Port Arthur Indicate Norse Ahead Of Columbus 200 Years". The article is about the discovery of Viking relics near Port Arthur, including a sword, an axe, and a supposed shield handle. Professor Broensted pointed out that the discovery led to the probability of Norse settlements in pre-Columbian times. There is a black-and-white photograph of the discovered sword, battle axe and iron grip to a shield. The article is dated to 1948. x- This is a printed, two-page brochure from St.George's Cathedral in Kingston. The front cover has the event title in red texts, reads "A United Service Demonstrating Oneness with Britain at St.George's Cathedral, Kingston on St. Georges Day". The event is dated to April 23, 1941. The inside pages and the back cover list the overview of the event and the scripts for prayer. y- This is a newspaper clipping. The title is "Information To All Choir-Masters and Choristers". The text is about a massed choir in commemoration of the fiftieth Anniversary of the death of Sir John A. MacDonald, requested by the Government of Canada. It is dated to May 24, 1941. The paper is tucked in between the two pages with articles of "Country Will Pay Tribute To Sir John A.Macdonald At Kingston Saturday, June 7" and "The Friends of Sir John A.". z- This is a brochure of the order of a commemorative service. ad- This is a printed, single-sided paper with red texts, regarding the information of a civic memorial service. The service was held in honor of the late Norman McLeod Rogers, Minister of National Defence, who died at his duty on June 10, 1940.
