History

Patrick Cosgrave first applied his brewing skills in Toronto while in partnership with Eugene O'Keefe. In 1862, they purchased the Victoria Brewery, but the partnership didn't last. Joining with new partner Charles Sproat, they purchased a failing West Toronto Brewery and Cosgrave Brewery was born. Patrick Cosgrave's sons, John and Lawrence, joined the firm in 1871 and 1879, respectively, and formed Cosgrave and Sons Ltd. John and Lawrence inherited the brewery in 1881, after their father's death. In 1934, E.P. Taylor acquired control of the company and merged it two years later with the Dominion Brewery, forming Cosgrave's Dominion Brewery. All Cosgrave brands were stopped in 1945 when the operation was taken over by the O'Keefe Brewery.
