Description

a- A brass instrument for obtaining a diagram of the pressure-volume or pressure-time changes in a steam engine or compression cylinder during the working cycle. It is comprised of two cylinders that are attached to each other, with valves, handles, and a cord coming out from the sides and ends of the cylinders. b- The wood case is rectangular with brass hinges and internal fittings, a metal handle and a central fastener. It has a label on the inside of the lid which reads "DIRECTIONS FOR Straight Line Indicator" (See notes for full label). Several metal pieces are screwed into the bottom of the box, to house the indicator. The bottom half of the box is lined in blue felt. c- A brass pipe fitting. It has a wider end with a threaded inside, and the smaller end has threading on the outside. d- A metal rod, bent four times and pointed at one end. e- A metal tool, that is tapered at one end, and has a threaded opening at the other. On each end there is a textured band. f- A small metal tool, with a threaded opening at one end, and a box wrench at the other. g- A spring with a metal band at each end. The number 60 is stamped into each end. h- A spring with a metal band at each end. The number 40 is stamped into each band. i- A spring (of a smaller gauge) with a metal band at each end. Each end has the number 20 stamped into it. j- a small metal cap, with a threaded inside and texture along the outside top rim. k- A small metal cylinder with a hole down the middle. l- A small metal cylinder with a hole down the middle.
