Description

A wooden block plane consisting of 5 parts.
a- The body is made of a dark brown hardwood. It is coffin-shaped with a flat toe and heel and rounded cheeks. A wide throat cuts diagonally through the centre of the body. The sole is flat. There is a metal plate attached to the sole ahead of the mouth, secured by 4 slotted screws.
b- The wedge is made of the same hardwood as the body. It is wide-set and the top edges are beveled. The bottom edge tapers slightly and splits into two prongs.
c- The primary iron is a rectangular strip of dark grey metal. The top corners are rounded and the bottom is flat. There is a long key-hole in the centre to accommodate the secondary iron (d) and screw (e). A stamp reads "SPEAR & JACKSON/S*J/EXTRA CAST STEEL/WARRANTED" with an ensign of a crown.
d- The secondary iron is a rectangular strip of metal, shorter than (c). The top corners are chamfered. The bottom edge is flat and curves slightly inward. There is a small hole in the middle to accommodate the screw (e).
e- A short slotted screw made of a ferrous metal. It has 5 threads in total.

History

Block planes are a variety of smoothing plane. They can be used to remove thin layers of material, or to chisel off thick pieces. They are usually 8 to 12 inches long and the iron is set at a low angle. Block planes are used for cutting following the grain of the wood.
