Description

A stained glass window entitled "Jutland May 16, 1916" depicting a ship's gunner wearing sound silencers over ears in front of a shelter from the blast of a cannon. The Kingston crest is in the top curve of the window. Below is a plaque "The Gift of Hiram A. Calvin".

History

The stained glass window was designed and installed by Robert McCausland in 1920 - 1921, Canada's longest active stained glass firm. Brass plates beneath each window name the donor of the window.

This window refers to the heroism of the British Midshipman. At the Battle of Jutland, the entire gun crew of one of the cruisers lost their lives.

This window depicts the Victoria Cross winner, John (Jack) Travers Cornwall, aged 16, Boy Seaman 1st Class, at his post on H.M.S. Cheshire. Although mortally wounded, he stayed at his post saying "I thought I might be needed". The encounter was the last of the great Navy battles in the Great War. The figured was copied from a painting by Sir Frank Salisbury R.A., for which Jack's brother was the model. The donor, Hiram A. Calvin was well known in Kingston through the Calvin Shipping and Lumber Company. His four sons volunteers for active service.
