Description

A representation of the crowds gathered to celebrate the sod-turning at the inception of the K&P Railway. In the immediate foreground is a small open grassy area, in the middle ground is a large crowd of people extending into the far middle ground is a large crowd of people extending into the far middle ground and into the background rising up a hill. There is a British flag flying in the middle ground at the left. In the background on and below the crest of the hill are a number of buildings that look like wooden residential houses. 'KINGSTON. - TURNING THE FIRST SOD OF THE KINGSTON AND PEMBROKE RAILWAY. - FROM A SKETCH BY F.M. SMITH" is printed in black below the image at centre.
