A stylized representation of an animal. In the centre of the composition, in profile facing left, is a large muskox-like animal. The animal has the long shaggy coat of a muskox, four small legs with padded feet, and long tusk-like antlers that curve up out of the top of its head. The hair coat is represented in variegated black, green, and gold tones with hatching. The print is signed "Pudlo" in pencil in the lower right below the image.
Pudlo Pudlat (1916-1992) began his artistic career in the 1950s when he moved to the Kinngait (Cape Dorset) area. He didn’t settle on drawing and printmaking until 1959-1960. His style is original and often contains subtle inclusions of humour. Umingmuk, 1970 is a powerful stonecut image that juxtaposes the texture of the muskox with the flatness of the printed surface and there is an undeniable element of playfulness in this work.
