a- This is wooden box with a metal engine indicator inside. The box is wood with metal fittings. There is a gold label on the top and a metal badge on the side of the lid. The label isn't legible, but the badge says, "DoBBIE McINNES LTD. / HEAD OFFICE / 57 BOTHWELL ST. / GLASGOW / AND AT / SO. SHEILD / LIVERPOOL / & LONDON." Inside, there is a bottom compartment and a top compartment. The left side of the bottom compartment folds down, and the engine indicator is attached to the side panel. The engine indicator is comprised mainly of two cylinders. The upper cylinder has a piece of paper attached to it. There is also a cord with a hook at the end attached to the indicator. Inside the lower compartment are various wood slots and holes for the indicator accouterments. The top of the lower compartment is the base for the upper compartment. On the one side, there is a piece of paper that says "DOBBIE-McINNES / LARGE SIZE / STEAM ENGINE INDICATORS / (External or Enclosed Spring Types)." It then has an index of which kind of spring to use with which engine pressure, as well as instructions for how to use the springs and order new ones. On the other side of that lid is a label that explains how to order new parts, attach and adjust the cord hook, and use the machine. There is a note attached to the inside cover of the lid which reads, "DONATED BY: / DR. A. J M. GRIFFITHS & SON / P.O. BOX 518 / PERTH ANDOVER, NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA E0J IV0 / JUNE: 1983" in blue pen. b- This is a metal valve with a wooden handle. The valve has a body, as well as two threaded ends coming out the side. The wood handle comes out the top and is painted black. Under the handle the number 23 has been stamped into metal. The number 23 has also been stamped into the wider pipe end. c- This is a small steel spring with brass heads on each end. One head has "E 16"" stamped into it. The other head says "V+21 8". d- This is a small steel spring with brass heads on each end. One head has "C 32"" stamped into it. The other head says, "72 KE". e- This is a small steel spring with brass heads on each end. There is a small piece of paper with a staple attached to the spring. The piece of paper says "DOBBIE MCINNES". The one head has "C 60"" stamped into it. The other head says, "135 U". f- This is a small steel spring with brass heads on each end. One head has "C 20"" stamped into it. The other head says, "U 270". g- This is a small metal wrench. It is double ended with a metal shaft between the two sides. One side is a larger, open ended wrench head. The other side is a smaller, closed-ended, 6 point wrench. There is a small rectangular hole in the shaft. h- This is a small metal cylinder. It is open at the ends and hollow the entire way through. i- This is a small rod made of a varnished wood. One end of it is rounded, while the other is flat. j- This is a small metal spring. There is a flat base at one end. There is a round metal cap at the other end. The cap has textured sides, and a small square hole in the top. k- This is a small wooden ruler. It has the same scale on each side, which go from 10-0-80 in increments of 10. There are words stamped into the middle of the rule which say, "30 TO THE INCH DOBBIE McINNES LTD". l- This is a small wooden ruler. It has the same scale on each side, which go from 0-80 in increments of 10 that aren't evenly spaced. There are words stamped into the middle of the rule which say, "60 TO THE INCH DOBBIE McINNES LTD". m- This is a small wooden ruler. It has the same scale on each side, which go from 0-380 in increments of 20. There are words stamped into the middle of the rule which say, "120 TO THE INCH DOBBIE McINNES LTD". n- This is a small metal cylinder that is the body of a small container. It is metal, with a lip on the bottom and another toward the top. o- This is a metal cylinder that is the lid of a small container. It has a small lip at the top. p- This is a small piece of card stock. On one side, there is a illustrations of different kinds of engine indicators. On the other side, there is a paragraph of instruction. q- This is an inventory of the parts in an engine indicator. Beside each count there is a check mark in blue pen. The elements listed are, springs, scales, indicator cock, spanner, drift pin, sleeve, spare drum spring, spare needles (in box), and set square. r- This is a photograph of the side of an engine. An engine indicator is used for obtaining a diagram of the pressure-volume or pressure-time changes in a steam engine or compression cylinder during the working cycle.
