This is a wood box with a compass inside that is mounted on gimbals. a- The bottom half of the wooden box that contains the compass. There are two metal hooks on the front and back of the box. The cover of the compass is curved and a clear liquid is suspended inside it above the card with the compass points on it. The makers mark on the compass reads, "Sold by Wm. Robertson & Son Made in U.S.A.// Halifax, N.S." On the black frame of the compass is, "E.S. Ritchie & Sons 81677 Boston". On the side of the compass is a label that reads "St.Lawrence College 009284". b-The wooden lid of the compass box. It has pegs on the edges to close tightly to the box.
