Description

A metal smoothing plane comprised of three parts, a rectangular metal body with a flat sole (a), a wooden wedge with a rolled top and a tapered bottom (b), and a flat rectangular iron with a flat blade (c). The iron and the wedge fit inside of an angled cutout in the body of the plane, and the wedge holds the iron in place as the plane runs across the wood surface below.

History

Smoothing planes are used for the finest finishing work on the wood surface. Before sandpaper was in common use, surfaces such as veneers were not sanded down, but "smoothed" with the smoothing plane. It was essential to set the iron with extreme precision, and to work with the highest degree of skill.
