Description

A wooden plow plane consisting of 6 parts.
a- The body is a rectangle made of a neutral brown hardwood. Two holes run through the width of the body. The throat cuts diagonally through the height. A metal plate sits at the front bottom edge and acts as a depth stop. It is secured in place by 4 slotted screws, with one screw missing. A second depth stop sits at the back bottom edge and is adjustable by means of a metal nut on top of the body. Stamps on the toe read: "HIBERNIA/Wm MARPLES & SONS/SHEFFIELD"; "H.J.DORRICOTT". 2 stamps on the top of the body read "H.J. DORRICOTT". A stamp on the heel reads "H.J. DORRICOTT".
b- The fence is made of the same hardwood as the body. It has 2 arms that fit inside the holes in the body and have an adjustable depth. Both ends of the arms are capped with brass. The side of the fence facing the body is flat with a rabbet in the centre. The side opposite the body is moulded decoratively.
c- The wedge is made of a hardwood similar to the body. It tapers to a point on one end and is rounded on the other. A small curved cut-out below the head allows for easy handling.
d- The iron is a strip of grey metal. The top edge protrudes out to one side. It narrows near the cutting edge. The cutting edge is flat and beveled. Stamps on the iron reads "MARPLES & SONS/(S)HEFFIELD"; "3".
e & f- 2 identical wooden keys. They are used to wedge the fence into place when assembled into the body.

History

Plow planes are grooving planes designed to cut grooves in the middle of a workpiece. The depth and distance from the edge are easily adjustable, making it a very versatile tool for a complex project. Plow planes are often aesthetic pieces as well as practical ones. The moulded edges of the fence serve to decorate the plane as well as improve grip.
