Description

Wooden block plane comprised of three parts, a wooden coffin-shaped body with a round handle on the heel (a), a wooden wedge piece (b), and a flat rectangular iron comprised of two pieces of metal attached by a screw (c). The wedge and the irons fit together through an angled cutout in the plane, and the wedge holds the irons in place as the plane runs across the wood surface below. Stamped on the toe of the plane is "[STAB]". Stamped on the iron is "MARSH BROTHERS & CO/PONDS WORKS CAST STEEL".

History

Block planes are a variety of smoothing plane. They can be used to remove thin layers of material, or to chisel off thick pieces. They are usually 8 to 12 inches long and the iron is set at a low angle. Block planes are used for cutting following the grain of the wood.
